Hoodia Side Effects

There are a lot of speculations on whether intake of Hoodia is safe or harmful in the long term. As diet supplements flood our market, there has not been enough studies to conclude the safety of a number of these dietary pills. More often than not, preceding products paved way for a good amount of skepticism due to long-term harmful side effects after a prolonged intake of a certain pill. Before taking in a particular weight loss pill, we must first scrutinize the possible published side effects of Hoodia.

There have been no conclusive studies that point to Hoodia’s harmfulness to our bodies. Yes, it is not an assurance that organic is safe and an all natural product is better than the others. Unique Hoodia comes from 100% Hoodia Gordonii plant, which is grown in many parts of South Africa and Namibia. The locals in the area regard this plant as medicinal due to its curative nature- cure for indigestion.

A number of studies claim that due to properties inherent in appetite suppressants, a long term intake of the pill would pose some problems with the liver. A prolonged intake of these pills would put stress on the liver as these pills contain components that take twice as much effort for the liver to break down. With Hoodia, it was found that it contains an active ingredient commonly referred by pharmacological companies as P57, is easily broken down by the liver. Thus, it poses no proven adverse side effects relevant to liver function.

Another thing to consider when deciding to take in supplements are the other medication maintenance we take. As an appetite suppressant, the Hoodia sends signals to the brain that we are full. This is done by sending mixed signals to the brain that our glucose level is still at a certain level, hereby curbing our appetite and need for food intake. Diabetics should take Hoodia with extra precautionary measures. With Hoodia in their system, it turns off the regular warning device that tells our body that our glucose level has dropped. This increases the risk of a serious drop in sugar level.

Another side effect for taking in appetite suppressants is an increase in heart rate and increase in blood pressure. However, there are still no conclusive studies have been submitted proving that Hoodia intake results in increase of either.

Though there are no conclusive and published findings on the side effects of Hoodia, let us always consider a professional dietitian or a doctor’s opinion before taking in appetite suppressants.  It is important that we are fully knowledgeable of both the benefits and side effects of the weight-loss pills that we are taking. Let us also consider that the locals of South Africa taking the organic Hoodia and experiencing an adequate appetite suppression are not mixing the Hoodia with any other anti-depressant, anti-cholesterol, or diabetes control medications like most of us do.

Hoodia is a natural and safe way to lose weight, and to help us assure ourselves of a healthy life ahead, let us seek an expert opinion to help us with our medications. Couple this weight loss supplement with proper diet, an exercise regimen and an ample intake of water, losing weight can be safe and natural.
